Building a Brand Personality that Connects and Converts

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Whether you adore it or roll your eyes at it, this day is a reminder of the power of connection and thoughtful communication. I’ll admit, that Valentine’s Day holds a special place in my heart. Years ago, my husband surprised me with a handwritten letter that wasn’t just sweet—it was a reflection of how well he truly knew me. That thoughtful gesture taught me something valuable: the way we express love (or our brand’s value) can leave a lasting impression.

With this upcoming celebration in mind, I created a special episode of The Scalable Marketing Machine Podcast to help you craft a brand message that truly resonates with your audience. Just like a heartfelt Valentine, your brand personality, consistency, and voice can create meaningful, lasting connections. Let’s explore how to make your ideal clients fall head over heels for your brand this season!

Discover the Four-Step Framework of Scalable Marketing

Before we get to the heart of today’s discussion, I want to remind you of the four steps that make up the Scalable Marketing Machine framework: Brand Communication Strategy, Marketing Growth Strategy, Team, and Leadership. These steps honed over my 15-plus years in marketing, are essential for building profitable, scalable marketing programs. Today, we'll focus on the first step—Brand Communication Strategy—through the lens of love languages.

Mapping Problems to Solutions: The Logical Side of Communication

Last week, we discussed creating a messaging matrix—mapping core values to the pain points of your ideal clients and then aligning those pain points with your actual solutions. The objective is to ensure your messaging is clear and effectively communicates how your products and services solve your customers' problems. It's crucial to check whether you're genuinely connecting with your target clients and motivating them to take action before you consider any drastic changes to your products or services.

Adding Personality to Your Brand: Go Beyond the Basics

While it’s vital to map out your core messages, it’s equally important to deliver them with flair. Your brand personality should make your ideal customer's heart flutter. Let’s break this down further:

Be Inspired by Successful Brands

Take Goodr Sunglasses, for example—a quirky, fun, and sporty brand. Every detail, from their copy to the product names, exudes personality. Even their terms and conditions page is in line with their unique voice. Ray-Ban, on the other hand, leverages its rich history and timeless appeal. These brands show how personality can vary but still create a strong connection with customers.

Identify Your Brand’s Adjectives

First, identify three to five adjectives that describe your brand. If your brand were a person sitting across from you, having coffee, what would their personality be like? Are you quirky, serious, reliable, or fun? Clarifying these adjectives provides a foundation for all your brand communications.

Consistency is Key

Next, do a quick audit of your existing platforms from landing pages to social posts. Is there a consistent look, feel, and sound? Consistency helps in retaining your audience’s attention and makes your brand memorable.

Show, Don’t Tell: Develop a Unique Brand Voice

Showcasing your unique selling points through your brand personality can make a huge difference. Develop this unique voice across all platforms—websites, emails, social media, even the text on your buttons and pop-ups. The key is to communicate authentically and consistently.

Use the Right Resources

One of the best resources to help you improve your copy is Ann Handley’s book, "Everybody Writes". It’s a comprehensive guide filled with valuable tips on developing compelling and authentic copy for your brand. Remember, as a founder, you need to understand enough to guide your team effectively.

Collect Exemplary Copy

Gather examples of well-written copy that truly represents your brand’s voice. This can include successful social posts, email subject lines, or even website content. If you’re starting from scratch, look at brands you admire and analyze what makes their copy effective.

Let Your Personality Shine

Often, your brand's personality is an extension of your own. Don’t create a brand that feels forced or inauthentic. If your personality is naturally serious and reliable, reflect that in your brand. If you’re quirky and fun, let that shine through.

Ask for Feedback

If you’re unsure about your own personality traits, ask your closest friends or family for three to five words that describe you. It's a fun and insightful exercise that provides a new perspective on how you can infuse your personality into your brand.

Final Thoughts: The Love Connection

The ultimate goal is to create an environment that speaks to your ideal customers, converting them into loyal fans. Whether you're drawing inspiration from brands like Goodr, Ray-Ban, or Our Place, pay attention to the details. Building a strong brand personality is about creating a world that attracts, converts, and delights your customers.
